Christopher Newcomer Scholarship
To honor the memory of Christopher Newcomer, we are making scholarships available for those who need financial assistance.
Players, families and friends of the Oconee Futbol Club,
I am struggling in writing this message to you due to its heartbreaking content, and it is with much sorrow that I do so. Please excuse me if I am brief.
This Saturday evening one of our Junior Academy players and his father lost their lives in a horrific plane accident. Seven year old Christopher Newcomer was new to OFC and had a wonderful time playing this season at the WCA fields. I ask all of you to keep Christopher’s mother, Kattia Blanco in your thoughts and prayers as she mourns this terrible loss. I cannot imagine the pain and anguish she is experiencing right now.
We do not know much about the accident or anything else right now. When more information is available we will let you know. Coach Dante will be visiting Kattia on behalf of OFC sometime tomorrow if she is able to receive him in her time of grief.
I am sure that Kattia will have many needs in the days to come. Our club is filled with compassionate people and I know that we will extend our help to her as much as possible. If there is some way you would like to help, feel free to respond to this post and we will monitor responses and reply as quickly as possible.
As needs come to our attention, we will post it on the website or send an email. Please be patient with us as we recover from shock and wade through emotions trying to react to this terrible news.
Kattia, may God be with you.
Honoring Oconee FC player Christopher Newcomer – October 19th 2010
To honor Christopher, we ask that all OFC teams have their players wear a black stripe around their left sleeve during this weekend’s games. We also ask that every team circles up on the field, takes a knee to offer a moment of silence or a prayer in honor of Christopher before starting their match.
Inform your opponent and game officials what you are doing so they will see how Oconee FC respects and honors our members.
Update – October 20th 2010 am
Dante Trevino and Pat Mercardante went to visit Kattia the other day. She was thrilled that we will be honoring Christopher at each game this weekend. She requested that we video tape and snap shot the teams paying tribute to Christopher with arm bands and kneeling to pray before the match since she will not be present. It would be great if each team could do this and if someone would take on the task of compiling all the footage/photos onto one CD.
Pat contacted the photographer who took OFC pictures and we have expedited Christopher’s photos in order to give them to Kattia. The photographer also agreed to donate a 20×24 canvas poster of Christopher.
The OFC board has decided to name our scholarship program – The Christopher Newcomer Scholarship.
Not only will this honor our young player and his family, but through generous donations, it will afford many kids the opportunity to play soccer at our club.
Service arrangements have not yet been determined. An email will be sent when we have the information as well as being posted at this site. Our hope is that our club will be able to make a strong showing of support for Christopher’s family. We ask that players wear their colored game jersey and coaches wear their coaching shirt with khaki pants.
Please check back for new updates daily.
